What is Bakuchiol and why should you add it to your skincare routine?

In this blog, we will explore the skin benefits of Bakuchiol and what some current scientific research shows about this all-round fantastic ingredient to help you achieve that healthy youthful glow.

So, what is Bakuchiol and why should you be using it as part of your everyday skincare routine?

Bakuchiol is an extract taken from the seeds of the psoralea corylifolia plant and is classified as a meroterpene which means that its structure is a hybrid of both terpenoid and phenolic components (terpenophenol).

This pure active extract is different to the whole plant oil or even to the unpurified extract. For example, an unpurified version of Bakuchiol such as Bakuchi or babchi oil can contain molecules which will negatively impact the skinThe likely presence of psoralens in the unpurified extract can absorb UV and become phototoxic while on the skin leading to a form of dermatitis due to cellular damage.

Pure Bakuchiol, such as Sytenol A, works well as a skincare ingredient because it gives us a multifunctional approach. Here are some of its effects that lead to healthy skin:

Potent antioxidant activity – This gives skin a protective effect from stressors such as UV or pollution leading to reduced inflammation responses and preventing premature ageing.

Collagen synthesis is upregulated – Collagen provides structure to the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis and as we age, collagen synthesis decreases leading to loss of firmness

Increased cell turnover - for brighter more radiant skin

Anti-inflammatory – Reduces redness and inflammation so it suitable for sensitive skin

Regulates sebum and reduces Propionibacterium acnes - helping those who have regular breakouts or blemishes

Bakuchiol’s range of scientific evidence for its effect both on skin ageing and skin health make this a must have ingredient for even sensitive skin types.

Why not take a look at our Bakuchiol face oils with the options of a 1% Bakuchiol concentrate or 2% Advanced Bakuchiol Concentrate. Both of our Bakuchiol facial oils are formulated with the same base and below I will talk through the reason why they were added.
